´Happy Days´ beats Athidhi

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Telugu film ´Happy Days´ is rocking the box office and remains on top of the popularity charts this fortnight too. It´s hard to get tickets of the movie even after three-and-a-half weeks of its release. New release ´Athidhi´ comes in second.

The top five Telugu films are:

1. ´Happy Days´ - When it comes to making successful offbeat films, Sekhar Kammula is the best. His different sensibilities as a director enable him to make simple, heart-warming stories with strong characterisation.

All have appreciated his recent film ´Happy Days´, which is about eight engineering students tracing their lives during their course. The film is doing brisk business not only in the state but also in the US where it was screened much before its India release. The movie has raked in a lot of money and proves that audiences appreciate different stories.

2. ´Athidhi´ - It is a typical formulaic film filled with violence, gore, song and dance and does not offer anything new except Mahesh and a couple of well-picturised songs. Bollywood actress Amrita Rao makes her debut in Telugu cinema with ´Athidhi´, but it is Mahesh´s show all the way. While it is a treat for his fans, the regular audience may be bored of the staple fare.

3. ´Thulasi´ - ´Athidhi´ has pushed ´Thulasi´ one notch down. Actor Venkatesh returns to action with the film, which has a lot of commercial elements. Nayantara is paired with Venkatesh whose earlier film ´Aadavari Matalaku Ardhalu Verule´ was a big hit.

4. ´Chirutha´ - The film is running in quite a few theatres even a month after its release. The story lacks novelty, but Ramcharan Tej seems to have made a mark with the movie. The initial curiosity to see Ramcharan, megastar Chiranjeevi´s son, has no doubt propelled the audience to see him. It is doing average business.

5. ´Yamadonga´ - It was released quite some time ago but is going strong even now. It seems to have clicked despite not-so-favourable reviews. Keeravani´s songs are still popular with one figuring in the chartbuster list almost every week since the release of the film.

Mahesh-Sekhar Kammula venture soon

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

Clubbing the uncanny elements of cinema glamor and cinema grammer, Mahesh Babu and Sekhar Kammula are likely to pair for their next venture. It is the former who for the first time initiated the entry of corporate world in the movie making in Tollywood, while the latter provided the right place for music by relegating it to a corporate entity Big Music. Both of their mindset rightly dangles on the urban-orientation.After the swirling hit of Pokiri, Mahesh is on highwave of expectation among the producers and directors as well. Sekhar Kammula unleashed a new generation wave with his Happy Days. We have to wait and see how it clicks.

Balayya takes on dad’s mantle

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

NTR mesmerized hoards of people with his matchless getups as Lord Rama and Krishna. The impression remains so profound that even today, a Telugu man is prone to imagine NTR (in such roles) when he is to think of the specified gods. Now, it is the turn of Balakrishna to venture into the full-fledged role of Lord Krishna. He has also got into the shoes of his dad as Bhaktha. For this purpose, Balayya arrived on the sets with a clean-shaven glittering expression. Those days, NTR used to follow certain strict self-imposed rules while doing sacred mythological roles – like No to Non-Veg and Luxury life. Balayya too follows through some such reservations, though not penance-like. KRR produces and directs this film Panduranga, more or less readied on the lines of NTR’s blockbuster Panduranga Mahatyam. While Sneha is selected one among the two lead heroines, four others are already there as side-rung heroines. JK Bharavi has to show his mettle with meticulous research traversing the streets of Pandaripuram in Maharashtra. MM Keeravani scores beats for 12 lyrics.

Chiru envy about Charan’s following

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Charan was receiving great words of adulation from a lady who said she was big time fan of Charan. Chiranjeevi who was right there on the scene commented, ‘Excuse me, I am still here.. Dont you feel that I would be envy about it’. This is all in a lighter note during a TV show on which Chiranjeevi and Charan appeared together. A guest appeared on the show and said she is a great fan of Chiruta. Talking about the dances, Sowmya (the guest) said that she would give 500 marks out of 10 for his dances. A modest Charan said that he would only rate himself 50%. Reason? He thinks any one could dance great but expressions on face during the dance is a different school and Chiru is the head master of that school. He thinks that it is that area that he should improve.

Talking about the incident when his brother’s younger daughter Srija eloped and married her boyfriend Shirish Bharadwaj on October 17, Pawan Kalyan said, “Srija ran away from home without telling us. She was in love and she took this step. It is okay to run away. But she told the media that she got a threat to her life from the family. This (allegation) is unfortunate. Everyone in the family loved this child so much. Her mother (Kalyan’s sister-in-law) is unwell and was hospitalised out of shock after Srija ran away.

“I wish them (Srija and Shirish) well wherever they are,” he continued. “I hope she is comfortable. I would like to assure her that no harm will come to her or the boy. I don’t have any hired goondas (goons) or musclemen. I have come to surrender my revolver and its license to the police because I don’t need this weapon now.

“The police have more important tasks to do like tackling terror and goondaism,” he added. “They don’t have to waste their time on chasing couples who have love marriages,” Pawan said, obviously referring to reports in a section of the media that the city police had launched an ‘informal’ manhunt to trace the couple and were harassing those who were ’suspected’ to have helped in the wedding.

Srija, 19, and Shirish Bharadwaj, 22, got married at the Arya Samaj Mandir at Bowenpally, Hyderabad.

Jubilee Hills Circle Inspector M Srinivas Rao said Pawan Kalyan had a valid gun license since 1998. He possessed a US-made Damson six-chamber, .22 caliber revolver. He had obtained the revolver when he was a member of the Madras Rifle Club. “He has temporarily deposited the weapon with us,” the inspector said. “He has not cited any reason for doing so. He can take back the weapon if he wants to.” Chiranjeevi has also blessed his daughter and wished her happiness. In a brief statement on Saturday, Chiranjeevi pointed out that as a father; he was shocked to hear the news of his daughter’s sudden marriage. “Her sudden decision has shocked all of our family members,” he said. “But once reality dawned on me, I realized that the most important thing is my daughter’s happiness. All the members of my family feel the same. Wherever she is, I wish her all the best.”

The star thanked his friends and well-wishers who supported his family during the period and sought their blessings for his daughter.

We are taking up problems like prostitution, florosis and malnutrition in villages. Of course, everybody knows about my character. I am not involved in any crime. Today, I face the charges of bigamy.
