She is Aamir Khan’s new blue eyed girl who has impressed the superstar with her performance in his forthcoming home production Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. She will be seen opposite Imran Khan, who happens to be Aamir’s nephew! Once upon a time she was also linked to Ritesh Deshmukh! Renuka Vyavahare spoke to ‘Masti’ fame Genelia D’Souza to know about her journey to stardom…

Genelia D Souza is highly talked about these days!
(smiles) I am glad! My films are responsible for this, I am sure. Mere Baap Pehle Aap with Akshaye Khanna, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na with Imran Khan and an untitled Anees Bazmi film with Sharman Joshi… all of my forthcoming films are interesting. In Mere Baap Pehle Aap I play Akshaye’s love interest and the role is quite interesting as I essay the role of girl who is vivacious, extremist and frank… quite like the real me.

You were appreciated in Masti but soon after its success, instead of sticking around you chose to take up Southern films!
It wasn’t a conscious effort and cinema is cinema. No matter in what language you deliver your dialogues… I got good Tamil and Telugu films down south so I tried my hand at it.

So now that you are hands are full with Bollywood offers, will you go back to doing South films?
Right now I can’t say anything. It depends on the kind of offers I get.

Lot is talked about your forthcoming venture with Aamir Khan.
It’s a pleasure working with him. Even his nephew Imran has got his acting genes! They have completely different personalities though. Its Imran’s first film but he is so confident, well versed since he comes from a film family and is comfortable in front of the camera unlike other newcomers.

Is something brewing between you and Ritesh?
No, I’ve always maintained that he is a good friend. The press wrote what they wanted to but that hasn’t affected our friendship besides I am single!

Aishwarya rai worried about dates

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

She is at the most promising stage in her professional and personal life, but Aishwarya Rai is one worried woman currently.

If reports are to be believed, Ash has to choose between two very good (to say the least) projects with the most sought after film makers in India.

Ash has dates to accept only one film and she has to choose between Maniratnam and Shankar, both of whom had given important roles to this former Ms Universe during her initial stages in the film world.

Who can forget Ash in her grey sweater, sitting on the edge of the railing near the Kodai suicide point, flirting with Mohanlal in Iruvar? One could not but smile when the beauty swayed in a half-saree for Shankar’s Jeans.

While Shankar was the man who gave her the title of being the world’s eighth wonder in his Adhisayam song, it was Maniratnam who gave her an idea of screen presence and acting.

Ash’’s movie with Mani, where she will be paired with Abhishek (their romance bloomed in Guru) and Vikram (in Tamil) was a commitment that came much before Shankar’s Robot with superstar Rajinikanth.

Both the movies are in the pre-production stage and the shooting for both is slated to begin this September.Aishwarya, who has said that she is looking forward to working with her husband all over again, has also said she was dying to work with Rajinikanth.

Also, this dilemma takes on a different angle, with the astronomical fee she is supposed to have been offered for Robot.

If Ash accepts this offer, she will be completely occupied by Robot, as it is Shankar’s dream project and demands that kind of time from its actors.

In fact, inside sources say Ash’s contract with Shankar speaks of her putting motherhood on hold for this film, as it involves Ash losing weight and looking her best.

Rumors are rife that Aishwarya may just lose Maniratnam’s films (both the Hindi and Tamil ones) to Deepika Padukone.

When Aishwarya faced a similar date problem in Hindi for the role of Jhansi Ki Rani in a movie, the offer went straight to Deepika, who, of course accepted it (andhrastudio)eagerly.

So is Ash going to call the shots and ask Mani and Shankar to sort out their shoot dates so as to be a good part of both the films or is she going to sit plum on just one of the two offers and refuse the other? Watch this space for more.

Moreover, her Telugu film ‘Desamuduru’ was also proved a blockbuster. This had doubled her chances all over the world and she earned a lot of fan following too.

However, she had sets her eyes only on Bollywood and did not accept any offer by any other Telugu producer.

After a considerable gap, somehow she agreed to play in a Telugu film ‘Kantri’ at a huge remuneration. As the shooting of the film was completed, producers again started chasing her.

But, this time, she is saying a firm no to all the offers as she had signed four Bollywood films on big banners.

Salman, Katrina set to get married

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

The long time love couple, Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif is planning to tie the knot soon. Their marriage speculation has been doing the rounds in the film industry for quite sometime but now it is almost confirmed by a close friend of Salman that they are getting ready to embark into a new life.

Salman never discloses his personal life to the media but this time he had ardently expressed his desire to get married to his long time girlfriend Katrina Kaif. Though the duo has not made any official announcement of their marriage but it is almost decided. It is heard that their marriage is going to be a low profile and will be solemnized in the presence of close relatives and friends.

Though deeply in love, Katrina and Salman never make any public display of their emotions and always keep their love life away from the media’s eyes. Like other Bollywood couples, their relationship also passed through rough weather but they preferred to keep their problems under wrap and did not allow them to come into public notice.

I don’t mind item songs: Neetu

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

It’s not the easiest thing for a debutante to do a film which has two other new faces. But Neetu Chandra who made her Bollywood debut in Garam Masala two and half years ago, not only managed to get noticed, but even got plum roles thereafter.

Neetu claims it was a gamble that she took deliberately because she was sure an Akshay Kumar-John Abraham starrer would bring in the crowds, something that a solo heroine project with a newcomer “may not have assured”. And she was not wrong. She did Madhur Bhandarkar’s Traffic Signal and now One Two Three directed by Ashwani Dhir.

Playing a Haryanvi cop who’s a bit of a loudmouth was fun. “I had to take special classes in diction to play that character. It was fun doing this film and my hard work seems to have paid off as I have been appreciated for the role,” says Neetu.

Neetu’s kitty is full right now with Rahul Dholakia’s Mumbai Cutting, Dibakar Banerjee’s Oye Lucky Lucky Oye and PC Sreeram’s Flat No13-B.

Most outsiders have a tough time in carving their own place in the film industry. What makes Neetu so lucky? The perky actress says “luck” isn’t the only thing that has made her successful. “I choose my roles with care and pay close attention to the banner before signing on the dotted line. My hard work, positive energy, parents’ support and luck together has worked for me,” she adds. She’s also done her share of southern films and is currently working in her first Tamil film Yaavarum Nalam with actor Madhavan and director Puri Jagannath’s untitled Telugu film.

For a change, Neetu doesn’t come out with a politically correct answer when we ask her what she feels about ‘skin scenes’. As she says, “It entirely depends on the script. I don’t think it is a bad idea and if one can carry the character well, then nothing like it.” And even item songs are welcome. “Aishwarya Rai Bachchan did an amazing job in Kajra re and now Rakhi Sawant is fantastic in Krazzy 4, so what’s wrong in doing them. If they are shot well, I don’t mind item songs and will do them,” she says.

A family-oriented girl, Neetu spends “quality time” with her family, and is a black belt in Taekwondo and a basket ball player, a youth icon for Unicef and works for cancer and AIDS patients.

Guess what? She’s even got a sense of humour. If her hectic lifestyle doesn’t give her time for love, Neetu derives solace from the fact that she is “seeing eight to 10 guys — all the heroes of my films”.

Amir Khan wants the Climax of Ghajini to be changed

Monday, March 31st, 2008

Aamir Khan has got the makers to change the script of his yet untitled remake of Twlugu film, Ghajini. Aamir insisted on changing the remake’s climax as he was unhappy with the last 30 minutes of the original version.

Our source says, “After getting a new look for Ghajini’s remake, Aamir has begun the new schedule of the remake with various changes in the film’s pre-climax and climax portions.

TheTelugu version’s climax takes place in a medical college where the hero (actor Surya) takes on the villain played by Aamir’s Lagaan co-star Pradeep Singh Rawat, who is also involved in human trafficking.

There is a double role of the villain and the hero fights both of them in a hand-to-hand combat. But before the fight happens, the villain and his goons chase the second heroine (played by Nayanthara) to her college after which they disrobe and kill a medical student. The goons then announce that they shall continue to kill students until the hero comes out of hiding.

“Aamir knows that his biggest fan base is the family audience. Now, after the respect that he has earned post Taare Zameen Par and his rising popularity with children, Aamir wouldn’t like the remake to have any content which he doesn’t believe in. That’s why he has got the entire climax rewritten. Apart from the changes in the last 30 minutes of the film, the Hindi version remains true to the original’ adds the source.

Aamir khan gets Gollapudi Srinivas National award

Monday, March 17th, 2008

Riding high on critic’s rating and many an honour, Bollywood actor and debutant Director Aamir Khan’s moving tale of a dyslexic boy, ‘Taare Zameen Par’, has won the prestigious Gollapudi Srinivas National award this year.

Announcing the decision to honour Bollywood star-film maker for having made a sensitive film, another living legend of Indian cinema and jury member Kamal Hassan, and jury Chairman and veteran Director Singeetham Srinivasa Rao said ‘Taare’ was chosen from a final list of 19 films, out of 35 submitted for the award.

Well-known Telugu writer-turned-actor Gollapudi Maruti Rao had formed the Gollapudi Srinivas Memorial Trust in 1997 to perpetuate the memory of his second film Director-son Srinivas, who died in a freak accident while returning from a film shoot in Visakhapatnam in 1992.

Heaping accolades on Aamir for his impressive debut as a Director, Kamal said ”with his star status, Aamir could have made it like any other box office cliche, but ‘Taare’ doesn’t fall into this category.” Mr Srinivasa Rao and Mr Maruti Rao said ”Taare was chosen for the honour as Aamir has created an impeccable image and the right mood for a very sensitive subject within the commercial format and translated it brilliantly onto celluloid.” Mr Srinivasa Rao said ”Taare also doesn’t fall into a cliched art film category” as Indian cinema has been seeing for some time.

The award would be presented on August 17, the birth anniversary of his late son, Mr Maruti Rao said, adding that it was for the first time that a Hindi film had been given this award.

Another film that’s ready to strike in Tamil and Telugu versions is the next biggie, Race.

Director duo Abbas-Mustan’s latest thriller is being dubbed in south Indian languages and will be released simultaneously with the Hindi version on March 21.

Race is a stylish action thriller and action films fare very well in South markets. Also, the film has the potential to work big time. That’s what prompted us to go ahead with the strategy of dubbing the film in south languages,” producer Ramesh Taurani confirms.

Meanwhile, the makers have come out with a stylish book that gives the reader an insight into the film, besides feasting on some eye-popping pics from the thriller.

Rahul and Himanshu Nanda have designed this book, which only enhances the curiosity to watch the film manifold.
