Genelia says love is life

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

She’s the chirpy extrovert who just can’t stop talking nineteen to the dozen in the recent hit Santhosh Subramaniam. Actress Genelia who played the garrulous Hasini in the film seems as bubbly and active in real life too. “There is some amount of madness in everyone. If we are always serious in life, there’s no charm in it,” is her take. Success tastes sweet…

So how does it feel to taste success in Tamil? “It feels awesome. I was wondering whether I would be able to pull off the role for the second time since I acted in the original Telugu version Bommarillu as well. But I am glad with the results,” she says. “Only someone with true passion for this script could have done this remake and Raja and Ravi have that dedication. I admire them for that.”

Genelia became a known face with Boys in Tamil after which Sachin and Chennai Kadhal followed but didn’t do much for her career. We quiz her about this and she says, “I never got any negative feedback about my acting or the way I was presented. So that gives me a motivation to continue as a responsible artiste.”

She is all praise for director M Raja and editor Mohan who did not consider her unlucky and had no doubts that she would do justice to the role. “It’s good to see filmmakers like them who believe in taking responsibility for their work and do not blame the heroines if a film flops.”

Busy bee…
Genelia is busy with three Hindi films, including Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na starring Aamir Khan’s nephew Imran Khan and Priyadarshan’s Mere Baap Pehle Aap. She also has one Telugu and one Kannada film on hand. With so much going for her, is she game for Tamil cinema? Says she,“Of course, I want to do Tamil films. I want to do scripts that suit me.” Glamour is okay with Genelia as long as it is not vulgar. “I am not looking at heroine oriented roles. As long as I have an important presence in the film, even for five minutes, it’s ok,” she shrugs.

So what is her take on love? Does she have someone special in her life right now? “Love is life!” she smiles. “We love our parents, family and friends. But I have no one special in my life right now. I am single and enjoying it very much!” she grins.

And how can she best be described?
“I am a very positive person. Failure is the reason to prove myself. It keeps me on the move,” she concludes.

She is Aamir Khan’s new blue eyed girl who has impressed the superstar with her performance in his forthcoming home production Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. She will be seen opposite Imran Khan, who happens to be Aamir’s nephew! Once upon a time she was also linked to Ritesh Deshmukh! Renuka Vyavahare spoke to ‘Masti’ fame Genelia D’Souza to know about her journey to stardom…

Genelia D Souza is highly talked about these days!
(smiles) I am glad! My films are responsible for this, I am sure. Mere Baap Pehle Aap with Akshaye Khanna, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na with Imran Khan and an untitled Anees Bazmi film with Sharman Joshi… all of my forthcoming films are interesting. In Mere Baap Pehle Aap I play Akshaye’s love interest and the role is quite interesting as I essay the role of girl who is vivacious, extremist and frank… quite like the real me.

You were appreciated in Masti but soon after its success, instead of sticking around you chose to take up Southern films!
It wasn’t a conscious effort and cinema is cinema. No matter in what language you deliver your dialogues… I got good Tamil and Telugu films down south so I tried my hand at it.

So now that you are hands are full with Bollywood offers, will you go back to doing South films?
Right now I can’t say anything. It depends on the kind of offers I get.

Lot is talked about your forthcoming venture with Aamir Khan.
It’s a pleasure working with him. Even his nephew Imran has got his acting genes! They have completely different personalities though. Its Imran’s first film but he is so confident, well versed since he comes from a film family and is comfortable in front of the camera unlike other newcomers.

Is something brewing between you and Ritesh?
No, I’ve always maintained that he is a good friend. The press wrote what they wanted to but that hasn’t affected our friendship besides I am single!

Hindi Bommarillu To Give Rs 1 Cr for Genelia?

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Actress Genelia will owe a lot to the film ‘Bommarillu’ as this has been taking her places, firstly it was the Telugu version which became a super hit and gave her a much needed hit, then there was the Tamil version ‘Santosh Subramaniam’ which also became a hit and now she is a hot star in the Tamil region.

Now, well known Bollywood producer Boney Kapoor has taken the rights for the remake of this film in Hindi and yet again Genelia has been approached by him for doing the role of Hasini. Sources say that the film maker has offered her a whopping 1 crore for doing the film.

Also, Genelia will be pairing up with the most happening hunk Harman Baweja in the film. Looking at the way luck has been shining on this girl, it is only a matter of time before she sets foot in the top league of Bollywood and gives the Bipashas, Kareenas a run for their money. All the best for that Genelia!!!

its Bommarillu vs Aduvari matalaku arthale veru !

Friday, April 25th, 2008

There is an interesting battle going on at Tamil Box Office now. It is between the Tamil remakes of two great Telugu movies. The commercial blockbuster N Baskar’s Bommarilu was remade in Tamil with Jayam Ravi - Genelia playing lead roles as Santhosh Subramaniyam and it is doing well in all the centers of the state - especially in big centers like Chennai, Coimbatore and Madurai. Jayam Ravi – Genelia’s onscreen chemistry is good. Young people have fallen in love with their pairing.

On other hand, Dhanush - Nayantara starrer Yaradi Nee Mohini which is remake of Venkatesh’s Adavari Matalaki Arthalu Verule is also doing very well business in B and C centers. It seems that Santhosh Subramanyam has slightly over edged the Dhanush starrer at the end of this week. Let’s hope there will be no major changes in the status of these movies till May 1st. Vijay’s big summer release Kuruvi hits the screens on the day and one can be sure that the film will take over the Box Office from day 1.

Playing Hasini second time is tough,Genelia

Sunday, April 20th, 2008

Genelia has never believed in coincidence. “But I acknowledge it now because I don’t know how else to explain the recent events in my life. First, my film Bommarilu, the Telugu superhit of last year, was selected to be remade in Tamil as Santosh Subramaniam. I was chosen for it, even though it could’ve been played by other heroines. And April 12, the day Santosh Subramaniam released, is the same day I started shooting for the Bollywood version of Bommarilu,” says an excited Genelia.

Her role Hasini, in Bommarilu was a motormouth, which endeared her to the masses. But playing the same character for the second time in Santosh Subramanian wasn’t easy, says Genelia. “I kept thinking it would be a cakewalk, but the original script kept haunting me. So I was nervous wondering if I’d be able live up to expectations. The audience already knew what Hasini was like. It was a really scary thought to replicate the same act,” says she.

But she scored once again and Genelia now enjoys playing performance-oriented roles. Adding that as an actress, you sometimes want to be taken seriously besides just playing arm-candy to the hero. Says she, “I don’t want heroine-centric films; I don’t believe in them. I just like being part of a story. I don’t mind being there for just five minutes, but it has to be worth it.” And what about-facing competition? “I believe talent never goes unnoticed. Also, it’s high time people started experimenting. Somebody has to take up that responsibility. And I’m doing just that,” sums up Genelia.

Heroine Genelia who was iron leg before the release of Bommarillu film, the Bommarillu Hasini changed to golden leg immediately after the release of Bommarillu. The success of Dhee further pushed her crazy image in to the youth audience.

Though she is busy in Telugu and Tamil films, all eyes are on Bollywood and finally signed two films – one with Amir Khan and a film with director Priayadarshan.

Now she is quoting Rs75 lakhs as remuneration for her next Telugu film. Producers are ready to pay that amount to cash her craze.

She may further move up, if her Hindi films make some magic at the box office.
