Swagatham Review

Monday, January 28th, 2008
The image “http://www.whereincity.com/files/movies/images/1593_main.jpg” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

‘Swagatam’ is probably one of the much-hyped films of Jagapati Babu in a very long time. It has our hero and two heroines, Anushka and Bhoomika and good dosage of sentiment and the usual triangular love story. Only this time, it is set abroad ‘€“ in the US, to be precise. After having been bombarded with Europe and Australia in most films, the US suddenly appears different and visually appealing. Probably because not many films have been set there in a long time.

The film happens to be the 75th film of Jagapati Babu. It is a huge budget film unlike most of his films in the recent past. He has co-produced the film and has decided to distribute it himself in the US. Naturally, the expectations have been very high. To be fair to Dasarath, he does not disappoint. In the sense that it is what one would typically go to watch in a Jagapati Babu movie.

Dasarath starts off in a novel way as far as a Telugu film is concerned. His story is set in the US, he has a heroine who is a part-time event manager and runs a boutique simultaneously. For a change, she is not all over our hero. Instead, she tries to keep her family together and clear her loans. Bogged down by family issues, Shailu (Anushka) has little time to look at the bright side of life. She is forever hassled and has a temper that frightens people.

In comes KK or Krishna (Jagapati Babu) into her little world. And with him, he brings cheer into her otherwise dull life. Suddenly, her problems are solved in a jiffy and she takes to the guardian angle in her life. Of course, he having a daughter Janu about the age of her nephew-son Chikoo, does not deter her from falling for him. But there has to be trouble in the la la land. So, in comes the twist in the tale in the form of KK’€™s wife Vidya (Bhoomika). Like in most films with a triangular love story, one of the characters has chronic leukemia. Thankfully, Dasarath spares us and does not fall into the trap of using a rather lengthy scientific name.

As the clock ticks away, we are taken on a short trip into the past. This is another aspect of KK’s life and it shows how love happens between KK and Vidya and how they get married. This is the part that Dasarath handles rather well and this part of the film is his completely. KK in the past happens to be a self obsessed, bossy and disciplinarian businessman who meets Vidya of Jalaja Rao Marriage Bureau. Instead of finding a match for him, Vidya match fixes KK and they end up marrying each other after a short courtship.

Now who has the terminal illness and who dies in the end and who gets who, makes up the rest of the film. Jagapati Babu, Anushka and Bhoomika carry off their roles nicely. Arjun as the misunderstood brother-in-law of Anushka is perfect as the NRI doctor and friend of KK. Sarat Babu, Rama Prabha, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, MS Narayana, Ali, Sunil ‘€“ all have small roles, but fit their parts well and provide the laughs.

Music by R P Patnaik is not extraordinary, but there is a remix version of Piya tu ab to aaja, which the young audience may like. For the rest of it, it suits the storyline, though it does not make any long-lasting impact. The scenes in the US have been well-shot and the beauty of the North American capital is shown in a colourful palette.

Dasarath takes an entire sequence from Michelle Pfeiffer-George Clooney film One Fine Day, is inspired heavily by Shah Rukh’s Kal Ho Na Ho for the first part. We cannot blame him though, as they are the mushiest of the mushy films that you can get. Yet, he holds his bit, thanks to the second half.

However, we cannot say it is something that we haven’t watched before. Actually, Dasarath puts together many borrowed pieces to complete his puzzle. It comes with all the trimmings and the sweet and bitter taste of a rich, gooey chocolate cake. It is a sincere effort, but again, it may or may not appeal to everyone as it becomes a bit trite as it progresses.

Jagapathi Babu and Meera Jasmine are paired together for the first time. They are acting together in a film being directed by Jonnalagadda Srinivasa Rao. The film began its shooting from Friday without any media hungama. The film also stars young hero Shashank in another role. It is an action film with a dose of sentiment. Jonnalagadda and Jagapathi Babu had earlier worked together for Jagapathi which was a dud at box-office. Meanwhile, Jagapathi Babu’s 75th film, Swagatham, is hitting the screens next week. The hero pines all his hopes on this romantic drama directed by Dasaradh. “It is going to be another winner for me. Swagatham has all the ingredients of a perfect film,” he told the media.

Jagapathi Babu: ‘Bhoomika Is Soft and Anushka is Hot’

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Jagapathi Babu has given an exclusive interview and shared his views on the upcoming movie ‘Swagatham’ and his future projects.

Bhoomika and Anushka in ‘Swagatham’:
“It’s a family movie in the genre of Santhosham and Mavi Chiguru. Bhoomika plays the role of a ‘Wedding Planner’ running a marriage bureau. As the role requires softness, Bhoomika was picked. Anushka plays the character of a US settled ‘Event Manager’. As the role needs hot appeal, activeness and speed, Anushka proved to be right choice. I play the role of a businessman in Hyderabad with good humor in characterization”.

It’s Coincidental:
“People ask me if I intentionally show difference in the genre of characters I choose. I play an action role, a family oriented role and immediately switch over to a supporting hero. It’s all happening coincidentally. I feel I have to do all sorts of roles being an actor. I like to do everything. I listen to various stories and pick up the best. Swagatham is one such thing”.

Dasarath On Swagatham:
“Dasarath did a wonderful job on Swagatham. He proved his mettle with Santhosham and then made two different genres of films. But those films didn’t meet the expectations. Hence he came back to his familiar style to make ‘Swagatham’. He proves his mettle once again. It’s a sort of good husband’s role for me after a long gap.”

About Krishna Vamshi:
“Krishna Vamshi directed a song in the film at Humpi. That was shot on Anushka and me. He is known for his sensuous touch in direction. And he filled the song with lot of sensuous things”.

Jagapathi Babu as Producer:
“Major part of the film was shot in USA at New York and New Jersey. I liked the story a lot and hence stood as producer. Many producers liked the story but stepped back due to the heavy budget involved in it. I’m fortunate for being the producer of the movie as the project is very promising. My friends are exhibiting the movie in USA on behalf of me”.

About Film Reviews:
“Reviewing films is very responsible job. Many websites are taking active part in that aspect. Reviews would certainly show impact on movies. It’s not true that every review in every small website would show impact. But reviews in popular websites would certainly show the affect on the collections of the film”.

Anushka in Love ?

[anushka+shetty-1.jpg]

The sexy yoga teacher from Bangalore is reportedly in love. Anushka has been romantically linked to a couple of actors earlier. The name of Nagarjuna was also heard very prominently in this respect. She was also stated to have had a steamy affair with Gopichand during the making of Lakshyam. She even admitted to some special relationship with Gopichand but nothing more was heard after that. She has now bagged a chance to star with Gopichand once again in a new film.

According to people in the industry, Anushka now seems to be smitten by Jagpathi Babu. She is starring with him in the soon to be released film ‘Swagatham’. She is so bowled over by Jagapathi Babu that she is seen praising him in front of everyone. Jagapathi Babu is known to treat all his heroines in a special manner and is also known to maintain a good relationship with them.

Jagapathi Babu is going places. The hero made a couple of special appearances in films last year. All the films in which he made a special appearance have done exceedingly well. Jagapathi Babu has now earned the image of a mature and sober actor. He is seen playing big brother to some of the young heroes.

Jagapathi Babu’s latest film ‘Swagatham’ with Anushka and Bhumika is all set for release on January 24. But the big news is that he will soon star in a new film with superstar Rajnikanth. The film is a remake of a Malayalam film. The film is being remade simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu. Ashwini Dutt is producing the Telugu version.
