Tamil superstar R. Madhavan needs to shed six kilograms to look compatible on screen with Shruti,Tamil entertainment heavyweight Kamal Haasan’s daughter, who is set to make her debut with the star. Madhavan and Shruti will team up for Marathi director Nishikant Kamat’s yet to be titled romantic-thriller. Madhavan told, “Until the contract was signed, we were not allowed to announce Shruti’s name. It’s a love story set in a strong thriller format. I had gone to Britain and lost over 10 kg last year. But then for Nishikant Kamat’s Tamil version of Dombivli Fast, I have to go back to looking like a blob. So I’m back to weighing 80 kg. But to look compatible with Shruti (who’s about 10 years younger to Madhavan), I’ve to bring my weight down to 74 kg and I have to do it immediately.” The actor has been given a timeframe to get into youthful shape. “When you’re overweight, it’s not difficult to lose some pounds. But when you’re normal in weight, bringing the scale down is tough,” Madhavan said. The music for the movie has been scored by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Madhavan’s Yenalu Orvan, the Tamil version of Dombivli Fast, has been a great experience for the actor but he doesn’t want to produce any more films now. “To begin with, the collections were average. But the film picked up by word of mouth and glowing reviews. I am going to make money as a producer. But no more production work for me. A producer’s job is too tough. Acting is tough enough. I did want to do Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Jab We Met’ in Tamil, but someone else has bought the rights,” the actor said. Currently Madhavan is doing a Hindi-Tamil supernatural thriller called Channel. “It’s about a family that comes to live on the 13th floor of a building. All sorts of eerie things happen to the family. It’s our own ‘Sixth Sense’, which I hope makes sense.” Neetu Chandra is Madhavan’s co-star in this spook fest and Vikram Menon directs it.

While Kamalhassan’s ten different roles and an equal number of dictions in the much-awaited “Dasavatharam” has been hogging the media limelight all these days, it has now emerged that the female leads are also in for some meaty roles, with heroine Asin playing a double role.

And the surprise package could well be Bollywood damsel, Mallika Sherawat, who is playing the role of a CIA agent in the movie, according to a press release.

Mallika, making her first direct entry into Kollywood, “dons an altogether different cap in the movie,” the release said. Asin, who has been delivering quite a number of hits, pairing top Tamil and Telugu heroes, will for the first time play a double role.

The other Bollywood connection to the film comes by way of singer Himesh Reshammiya, who also makes his debut in Tamil cinema. However, it is not clear whether he will render one of his own numbers in Tamil. The release further said that the audio rights of the movie have been bagged by Sony BMG, which makes its foray into the regional music market through the Kamal-Asin starrer.

The release quoted Shridhar Subramaniam, Managing Director Sony BMG India as saying it was “privilege for us to enter the Tamil music market with a project as grand and special as Dasavathram”.

Earlier slated for a Pongal (January 15) release, post production delay ensured that the producer, Oscar V Ravichandran rescheduled the dates for April.

The successful duo of director K S Ravikumar and Kamalhassan had earlier come out with the rib-ticklers, ‘Avvai Shanmugi’ and ‘Panchathantiram’.

Kamal Haasan will next be seen in Telugu in the multi-lingual film ‘Dasavataram’. We will get to see him in 10 get-ups, one more than the nine get-ups in the film Navaratri, which has inspired Kamal to make this movie.

He also takes the title credits for writing the story and screenplay for the film. Navaratri had ANR donning nine characters and Sivaji Ganesan playing the same part in Tamil.

Yet another highlight of the film would be Himesh Reshamiyya’s music.

He will be making his debut in south with this film. Incidentally, the film is also being made in Hindi. Another interesting part is that the re-recording of the music has been done by Devisri Prasad.

Kamal Haasan creates World Record

Away from bollywood, Kamal Haasan is making waves down South. And this time it’s his much-talked and hyped world record for playing 10 character roles in his film Dasavatharam which is making news. The magnum opus is finally ready to hit the screens. “It’s one of the most difficult, longest and hardest role I have ever done in my life,” says Kamal. Incidentally, the film also marks Himesh Reshammiya’s entry in the southern film industry. Looks like Kamal will be singing a new nasal tune this time.

Kamal & Rajini – A new battle of grandeur

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

With Dasavatharam all set to hit the marquee in the month of April 2008, announcement on Kamal’s next project has snuck its way to the media. Going by the details of it, looks like Kamal is all set for another mammoth venture right after his ten-role act in Dasavatharam.

Titled Marmayogi, the movie is said to be produced by renowned Hollywood production house Walt Disney pictures for a whopping budget of Rs. 100 crores – not quite known to Tamil cinema yet. Walt Disney has roped in Bharath Bala of Vande Matharam fame for the production management of Marmayogi.

It’s a clash which has been going on for decades, but now it seems like the battle of grandeur and production scale between two superstars of Tamil film industry – Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, is getting to its peak. When Rajinikanth signed up a 60 crore project Sivaji, Kamal finalized the even bigger Dasavatharam. Now with the former again coming up with the announcement of Robot, touted to be financially the biggest project to be conceived in Indian film industry, jointly produced by Eros International and Ayangaran, the latter takes his dream to the next level. Perhaps the celluloid greats are really thinking bigger and higher.

Coming back to Marmayogi, the movie will be produced in four Indian languages - Tamil, Hindi, Malayalam, and Telugu - simultaneously. Although the rest of the cast are being finalized, credible sources strongly suggest that Asin stands a bright chance to bag the role of Kamal’s lead lady. Hemamalini, who was last seen in Kamal’s Hey Ram, is also rumored to be a part of the venture.

Earlier, Kamal tantalized his fans with only a teaser trailer of his dream venture Marudanayagam, an epic tale of one of the lesser known freedom fighters. Kamal even screened the trailer to the Queen of England during her Indian visit. However, for reasons ranging from budget to time consuming research, Marudanayagam could not take off and was eventually shelved. Now, Marmayogi, as the names suggests, is expected to have a historical backdrop and has hence raised the bar among his fans.

Dasavatharam is in its final stage of production and Kamal will participate in the initial discussions of Marmayogi after Dasavatharam is wrapped up completely. So will Marmayogi serve enough Marudanayagam-fodder to eager Kamal fans?
