MS Raju Interview - “What’s wrong in remakes?

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008

M S Raju is top rated filmmaker. Although his recent films are not doing well and were dragged into controversies, they do not deter the big time producer. Raju turns now director with Vaana starring Vinay and Meera Chopra. As his maiden directorial venture releasing on Sankranthi, he speaks

What went wrong with your last two films?
I faced lot of criticism for `Aata`. It was meant to be an entertainer. What would I do if it didn’t connect with the audiences? We did sincere work. The film was not loser. It is with `Pournami` that I lost much. Even then, I don’t blame anyone for the failures. I take the responsibility.

You penned screenplays for many of your films. It is surprise that you choose a remake film for your maiden directorial venture!
When I saw the Kannada movie, `Mungaru Male`, it moved me and touched my heart. I was inspired. I wanted to produce it in Telugu. Later I felt that why shouldn’t I direct it myself when I was moved with the story. You have to direct a story that you loved. Remaking a film is nothing wrong. Even a great director like James Cameroon remade Titanic.

What is new in Vaana?
`Vaana` is an embodiment of love. A good romantic film is one that either makes you fall in love or arouses the romantic feelings. `Vaana` has that feel good factor. Subject is fresh. Screenplay is different.

The Kannada original was a tragedy. Don’t you think it is commercial risk?
Who said it is a tragedy? We have borrowed the main point and re-worked it without losing the original flavour. You will get to see my point after the release.

There is a heavy competition this time for Sankranthi!
As a member of Telugu film fraternity, I always wish all films should run successfully. Personally, I believe Sankranthi easily accommodates 3 to 4 films. People come to see my films for the feel goodness and I do have my own loyal audiences.

Some say it is not your directorial debut because you have been ghost-directing all your productions. What is your comment?
I accept the fact that only Gunashekar (Okkadu) and Kodi Ramakrishna (Shatruvu) were real the captains in my productions. They had brought their own stories and executed it so well. For other productions, I have provided the story, screenplay and everything. Others term it as ‘interference’ but I say it is ‘involvement’ in my own films. Now, Teja is directing a film for me and he doesn’t come into this category. He is real captain of the ship.

`Vaana` was supposed to be your sson’s debut film. Wasn’t it?
Yes, I planned this with my son Sumanth Ashwin. When I saw the movie for 10 times, I realized that the lead character should be matured guy. My son is in still teens.

How do you take criticism?
I welcome them. I do watch all films like a critic so when I read the bad reviews about my films, I don’t get offended.

Most of the stars and technicians who worked with you have failed when they left you!
I always pray that those who worked with me should further in their respective careers. We should not judge one by one flop. Mahesh Babu got big commercial break with my `Okkadu`; he is superstar now. Reema Sen became a big star. I gave life to Devi Sri Prasad. Trisha is a sensation now. Only few of them are not doing well but I wish them all the best.

What are the next films?
Teja is directing a film introducing my son. Then there is another movie to be directed by Kodi Ramakrishna. Some more will be finalised in a few weeks.

MS Raju’s lates offering ‘Vaana’ both as a producer as well as director is an honest attempt to make a neat film, which goes against the current trend. The film is a beautiful love story but with a subtle but clear message in the end for all young lovers.

Story:
Vinay is the only son of rich parents Jayasudha and Naresh. He has no aim in life and is wandering about enjoying the comforts provided by his businessman father Naresh. He comes across a beautiful girl Meera Chopra at a mall. He is so taken in by her beauty that he fails to notice a open manhole and falls into it. Meera rescues him and in the resultant confusion, she leaves behind her newly purchased watch.

The hero sees her with his face fully covered in the black drainage water. He tries to get in touch with a help of a phone-in programme on Radio. But it does not materialize. He sees her once again while he and his mother are going to attend a marriage. Vinay comes across the heroine once again but this time too his face is covered in black engine oil.

Vinay and Jayasudha reach Suman’s house and there Vinay learns that Meera is the daughter of Suman, a retired colonel and Seetha.

Meera’s marriage is fixed and her marriage is just about a week away. The hero manages to make Meera falls in love with him in just four days. Meera is even ready to elope with Vinay just two days before the marriage.

At this stage, Meera’s mother learns about her daughter trying to run away with someone. She asks Vinay to help her and see that Meera does not run away. Even Vinay’s mother slaps his son hard and warns him not to do any foolish thing like running away with the bride.

The heroine gets desperate as the marriage date is fast approaching. With just a few hours left for the marriage, the hero takes a decision. What is the decision? How it affects everyone is the suspense element that unfolds on the screen.

Performance:
Newcomer Vinay has a good height and physique. He has tried his best to come across as a young lover who is ready to do anything fairly well. It is only his dubbing that seems to be a bit too loud in comparison with his personality.

Meera Chopra plays her role with perfection. She is also hot and sexy in the song “Vunnatta Leenatta…” in a hot red costume. She looks beautiful like Simran and young and bubbly like Genelia.

Suman as a retired colonel has done another good job. His role is not too big to make much impact. Jayasudha as Vinay’s mother also gives a good and restrained performance. The rest of the star cast is okay.

Music is average but the cinematography is good. The natural beauty of places around Bangalaore and the rain scenes have been caught on camera beautifully. Comedy is just average. MS Narayana and Dharmavarapu do their routine stuff.

Prabhu Deva and Sunil appear in the first song and perform some dance steps.

Even producer director MS Raju appears in the song ‘Sirimale Vaana Paduthondhi loona” dressed up as a farmer driving a tractor laden with hay.

The hero has a white rabbit named ‘Devadasu’ for company from star to finish.

The film is a remake of the Kannada film ‘Mungare Male’.

However MS Raju has done a god job with the remake.

Final Talk:
The film is just like any other love story but for the twist in the end. It is the ending that makes watching the film worthwhile.

Vaana is a good watch, and it is a must watch for today’s younger generation that is blinded by love. They defy everyone and everything in their momentary madness called love. The tagline “Prema Madhuram Tyagam Amaram” is very appropriate.

All the rain shots in Vaana are natural

MS Raju’s directoral debut Vaana is releasing on 15th of this month. MS Raju, Paruchuri Bros, Sekhar V Joseph and KV Krishna Reddy met the press to discuss on the film. Paruchuri Venkateswara Rao said: Okkadu released on Jan 15th of 2003, the day of Sankranti, and now Vaana is releasing on 15th Jan of 2008, on Sankranti again. I already saw the rushes and I can vouch that the film came out brilliantly. MS Raju directed the film as if he had experience of directing 100 films. One of the specialities of the film is Suman. Even though the film is based on a Kannada film, we modified it to our nativity and added good comedy. And one more interesting thing is that all the rain in the film is natural. There is one place - Sakileshpoor - which sees rain through out the year. And it was our camera man Sekhar Joseph’s excellent work that brings this beauty on to the screen. Paruchuri Gopalakrishna said: Vaana audio is super hit. Kamalakar gave excellent music. In fact, he reminded of OP Nayyar. Also, Sirivennela penned excellent lyrics. In the past we have moulded several remakes into Telugu that became super hits like Gharana Mogudu, Assembly Rowdy. In fact, they turned to be better than their originals. Vaana will fall into the same category. MS Raju said: I invested good efforts into the film as producer and director. I fell for the story in the first hearing itself. I approached Suryaprakasa Rao, who had the rights of the film. He proposed that we both work together for this film. I have to thank him for that. Movie came out very well. Vinay and Meera Chopra did very well. Mainly, it is the story that has good feel. Sekhar V Joseph said: As soon as I came to know that MS Raju is directing this film, I gave up a project in Tamil to do this film. It came out very good. Editor KV Krishna Reddy expressed his confidence on the film.
